Project Overview
In this project, children create a book that is all about their names. They learn and share the letters in their names, how to write their names, how many letters are in their names, and compare/contrast their names with the names of their friends. They read a variety of picture books that highlight the unique elements of different characters’ names. Children engage in research to learn about the meaning of their names and the rationale for being named what they were. Using a variety of picture books about name identity as mentor texts, children learn about key aspects of print and narrative texts. They meet and interview an author to learn how to write, illustrate, and publish a book. After collaborating to complete one book that is all about their names, children share this book with their families in a book launch party, and donate a copy to the school library.
The project plans are organized by "Milestones." Milestones are like chapters in the longer story of the project. At each milestone, you will see the learning goals, key student questions, and a suggested formative assessment that will be essential for completing the public product. At the end of each milestone, we've included some considerations and suggestions to support your project implementation.
Keep in mind that all projects can be adapted to meet your needs and to work in your particular context.
